From this point forward, this guide assumes you have chosen Census-Sub-Division
at Step 1. Instructions for Census-Division and Economic Region are
covered in the Supplementary Guide
at the end of this guide.
There are six types of analysis:
- Competitive Advantage Analysis is an assessment
of the relative specialization and growth of local sectors. Sectors
are classified according to employment concentration and growth
compared to provincial growth overall and to growth in the same
sector provincially. Combined, these attributes can indicate the
local competitive advantage in specific sectors.
- Labour Flow Analysis provides a picture of the
movement of labour in and out of a community. It compares the number
of jobs in a sector held by local residents, whether or not they
work in the community, with the number of jobs in the community,
whether or not the workers live in the community.
Data Source: Competitive Advantage
Analysis (CAA) and Labour Flow Analysis (LFA) use customized employment
data by sector, from the Statistics Canada Census of Population.
CAA only uses "place of work" data for the employed labour
force - while LFA uses both "place of residence" and "place
of work" data. Place of work data indicates employment levels
at local establishments and place of residence data indicates employment
levels of local residents.
- Business Sector Analysis provides a profile of
individual sectors for selected municipalities. It presents the
number of businesses in each municipality in Ontario, ordered from
highest to lowest number of establishments. It also provides an
indication of the concentration of specific business sectors in
a community, compared to provincial averages.
- Community Business Profile gives a listing of
the number and concentration of businesses in different sectors,
for the municipality selected at Step 4.
Data Source: Both Business Analysis
tools use Canadian Business Patterns data, which includes businesses
registered by NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System)
sectors. Tabular reports and maps can be generated to show the relative
specialization of the community in different sectors.
- The sixth type of analysis gives values for various "Socio-Economic
Indicators." These indicators are based on 2001 and 2006 Census
data and are divided into two groups - "Housing, Income and
Rurality," and "Employment, Education and Age." Each
indicator can be mapped for a selected region of the province to
show the relative levels for each municipality.
The image below shows the options available at the Census-Sub Division level.
