Where to get community socio-economic data

Current statistics on small communities such as rural townships, towns or villages can be hard to obtain. Certain statistics that are regularly published at more frequent intervals for metropolitan areas are not available for towns or townships, e.g., employment numbers from the quarterly Labour Force Survey because the sample size from census sub-divisions is too small. Another problem is that business data can be suppressed for confidentiality reasons where fewer than 3 businesses in that sector exist in the local area, e.g., retail sales data.

Thus the choices you have when informing yourself about key socio-economic trends often comes down to these options:

  • Purchasing data for those limited set of variables available for small areas
  • Obtaining more frequent published data on provincial and regional trends and interpreting it in the context of local knowledge to make educated assumptions about whether they hold true for your community
  • Collecting local primary data yourself – e.g., conducting a business survey (see for example the BR+E survey)
  • Relying on census data where sample sizes are sufficient but which may be out of date
  • Extrapolating broader economic trends from annual local municipal data – e.g., assessment data/building permits/business licences

In order to help you consider your options this site contains a list of the most often used data sources for planning local economic development. The "Where to Get Socio-Economic Data" will let you quickly search a specific type of statistic you may be looking for (e.g., education levels in the local labour force). The results inform you of the frequency of publication, what geographic level it is available for, and who to contact to get the data.
