Describe your Project

Introducing the Logic Model

A logic model is a tool for describing your project and illustrating the relationship between your project’s objectives, activities, outputs (deliverables) and desired outcomes.  It outlines how your project will unfold.  It helps you identify and document the results of your work and the changes your work will effect in your organization, community or region.

In addition to identifying what will change, a logic model also states how the change will be implemented, reflecting your vision for change and the means you will undertake to achieve specific outcomes.

Why develop a Logic Model?

Many people don’t like planning and feel that it mires them in process and diverts energy away from productive work. But a planning exercise using a logic model can be quite satisfying, because it offers immediate support to your project in a number of areas:

  1. Efficient and effective planning

    • Gets you organized to plan and implement your project
    • Focuses your energy and resources
    • Clarifies your purpose (making it easier to stay on track)
    • Builds common priorities, which can then encourage teamwork amongst the people involved in your initiative

  2. Improved implementation

    • Keeps you on track by serving as a quick reminder of your project activities and short term results

  3. A foundation for tracking and evaluating results

      • Helps keep you focused on results instead of activities
      • Clearly identifies the outcomes you want to assess
      • Helps you develop a system to assess and document actual outcomes
